The Laboratory Assistant 4/Lead is responsible for advanced pre-analytical processing of laboratory specimens, procurement, and preparation of specimens for testing. This role involves performing tasks and tests with minimal supervision, providing guidance to staff, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. The Laboratory Assistant 4/Lead also serves as a mentor and resource for the team, providing training and technical guidance to lower-level staff while contributing to process improvements and high standards of patient care.
- Transcribe laboratory testing orders in an efficient and accurate manner.
- Ensure specimens are properly identified, labeled, collected, and stored.
- Expert in specimen processing.
- Applies advanced knowledge of specimen collections from individuals of varying ages, diverse physical and mental disabilities, and health conditions.
- Proficient in Point of Care Testing (POCT), if applicable to site.
- Explain collection procedures and provide patient instructions to ensure the accurate collection or preparation of specimens, to facilitate patient/caregiver understanding and to reduce patient anxiety.
- Expert in patient education, handling complex orders, and ensuring compliance with quality assurance and/or safety protocols.
- Responsible for supporting adequate staff coverage, and providing leadership, guidance, and counseling to staff. Serves as a point of escalation for patient concerns or complaints.
- Maintains a safe and clean working environment.
- Complies with established personal protective equipment requirements necessary for protection against exposure to blood and other potentially infectious body fluids.
- Provides all areas with administrative support, including inventory management, assisting in the development of policies or procedures, and the training of new team members and students on operational procedures. Serves as a resource for less experienced staff.
- May assist in staff development, including mentoring, coaching, and performance evaluation.
- Has the authority to fulfill supervisory responsibilities when the supervisor is unavailable.
- May assist with staffing to maintain minimum staffing levels.
- May register patients or provide courier services.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Associate degree or equivalent.
- Experience: 1 year relevant experience.
- Licenses/Certifications: None
