Med/Surg Authorization Pharmacist

Overview
At St. Luke's Health System, our pharmacists play a vital role in delivering safe, high-quality patient care across a collaborative and innovative health system. The Med/Surg Authorization Pharmacist supports acute care pharmacy operations through remote medication order verification and clinical authorization services for medical/surgical patient populations across the health system.
This position is designed to enhance medication safety, improve verification efficiency, and allow unit-based pharmacists to increase direct engagement with providers, clinicians, and patients. The pharmacist will serve as a system resource for medication order review, order set optimization, and workflow standardization while collaborating closely with inpatient pharmacy and interdisciplinary teams.
Responsibilities
- Perform timely and accurate medication order verification for inpatient Med/Surg patient populations across the health system.
- Review medication orders for appropriateness, dosing, allergies, drug interactions, duplicate therapies, renal/hepatic adjustments, and compliance with clinical guidelines and organizational policies.
- Provide clinical authorization and verification support to ensure safe and effective medication therapy.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and pharmacy staff to resolve medication-related questions and optimize patient care outcomes.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for inpatient order sets, medication-use workflows, and system standardization initiatives.
- Support ongoing workflow improvement efforts through participation in operational and clinical pharmacy initiatives.
- Assist in identifying opportunities to improve medication safety, efficiency, and pharmacy services through technology and process optimization.
- Maintain compliance with state and federal regulations, accreditation standards, and departmental policies and procedures.
- Participate in departmental quality assurance and performance improvement activities.
- Provide support and mentorship to pharmacy staff, students, and residents as appropriate.
- Document clinical interventions and maintain accurate records in the electronic health record.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
- Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an accredited college or school of pharmacy.
Experience
- Minimum of 1 year of acute care or hospital pharmacy experience preferred.
- Experience with inpatient medication order verification, clinical pharmacy services, or Med/Surg patient care preferred.
- Experience with electronic health records and clinical pharmacy systems preferred.
Licenses/Certifications
- Licensed Pharmacist in the state of Idaho or eligibility for Idaho licensure.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or American Safety and Health Institute preferred.
